Eaux Chaudes, Pyrenees, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Eaux Chaudes, Pyrenees, 1854. Spa town in the valley of the Gave d'Ossau in the French Pyrenees. Passing on, the road ascends a long and steep ascent, and the limestone cliffs begin to rise higher and higher; innumerable streams shoot out at every crevice; and the boxwood, which seems to favour limestone, appears wherever it has a chance. The road now commences a series of ups and downs - sometimes descending almost to the level of the ever-roaring Gave; and at others, clinging to the sides of precipices rising two or three hundred feet above it. The opposite side (the right) is not at all so precipitous; and here we begin to see the marble quarries in profusion'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

Eaux Chaudes, Pyrenees, 1854: A Journey Through Time and Terrain This photograph, taken in 1854, showcases the picturesque spa town of Eaux Chaudes nestled in the valley of the Gave d'Ossau in the French Pyrenees. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, invites us on a journey through the breathtaking landscape of this geothermal resort. The scene begins with the winding road ascending a steep incline, surrounded by limestone cliffs that tower above. Innumerable streams gush out from every crevice, and the boxwood, thriving in the limestone environment, can be seen clinging to the rocky terrain. As the road continues its ascent and descent, the landscape transforms. The left side of the valley becomes increasingly precipitous, with marble quarries emerging in abundance. In contrast, the right side is less steep, offering a glimpse of the tranquil Gave river below. This enchanting landscape, as described in the Illustrated London News, has captivated travelers for centuries. The town of Eaux Chaudes, known for its hot springs, has been a popular tourist attraction since Roman times. Its unique geothermal features, combined with the stunning natural beauty of the Pyrenees, continue to draw visitors from around the world. This photograph, a testament to the allure of this remarkable place, invites us to explore the wonders of the Pyrenees and the town of Eaux Chaudes, transporting us back in time to an era of discovery and adventure.
