EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 19th-century print, we witness a moment of historical significance as Edward, the Black Prince, passionately recounts the details of the Battle of Poictiers to his beloved wife Joan, known as the fair maid of Kent. The artist J Collyer skillfully captures the intensity and emotion in their faces as they engage in conversation amidst a serene garden setting. Edward, also known as Edward of Woodstock and Prince of Wales, was not only an esteemed military leader but also a devoted family man. As the eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, he held great promise for ascending to the English throne. However, fate had other plans for him. Tragically, Edward passed away just one year before his father's death without ever having ruled as king. Instead, his young son Richard inherited the crown. This poignant image serves as a reminder that even those destined for greatness can be cut short by unforeseen circumstances. The monochrome engraving adds depth and texture to this historic scene while emphasizing its timeless nature. It is evident that both Charles Monnet and J Collyer collaborated meticulously to bring forth this remarkable portrayal. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back in time to witness an intimate moment between two influential figures whose lives were intertwined with war and royalty. Their story resonates through generations and reminds us that history is not merely about battles won or lost but also about love shared and legacies left behind.
