'In Lambeth the returning officer, Mr. H. Onslow, presided at the nomination. Mr. Frederick Doulton was proposed by Dr. Evans and seconded by Mr. James Richardson; Alderman James Clark Lawrence was proposed by Mr. R. Taylor and seconded by Mr. Lyon; Mr. Thomas Hughes was proposed by Mr. G. T. Wilson and seconded by Mr. Stuart Barker; Mr. James Haig was proposed by Mr. F. Fowler and seconded by Mr. Reynell. Mr. Doulton, Alderman James Lawience, Mr. Hughes, and Mr. Haig spoke one after the other, and the show of hands was in favour of Mr. Hughes and Mr. Doulton'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865
