Encampment of the Rifle Brigade, at Constantinople - from a daguerreotype by J. Robertson, 1854. Scene from the Crimean War: British soldiers in Turkey. represented a detachment of the Rifle Brigade waiting "the assemble, " prior to falling in on their respective parades. Divested of their knapsacks, they are about to go through the customary morning inspection; after which they are dismissed to their tents. The easy, listless attitudes of the figures offer sufficient guarantee that no order had, at that period, been issued for the Rifles to quit the peaceful encampment for a more stirring existence. The men patiently await the bugle-call, when they go through a routine of duty which is daily attended to as a matter of course. Both battalions of this splendid corps are now serving with the expeditionary force in the East'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This daguerreotype, taken by J. Robertson in 1854, depicts a tranquil moment in the Encampment of the Rifle Brigade at Constantinople during the Crimean War. The scene showcases a detachment of British soldiers, belonging to this renowned corps, engaged in their morning preparations before falling in for parades. The soldiers are seen without their knapsacks, casually arranged on the ground, readying themselves for the customary inspection. Their relaxed and effortless postures attest to the absence of any immediate orders to leave their peaceful encampment for a more active engagement. The men, patiently awaiting the bugle-call, are poised to go through their daily routine of duties. At this time, both battalions of the Rifle Brigade were serving with the expeditionary force in the East. The corps, known for its exceptional marksmanship and mobility, was a formidable presence in the Crimean War. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of these soldiers, providing a poignant reminder of the routine and discipline that underpinned their existence amidst the chaos of war. The Illustrated London News published this image in 1854, offering its readers a visual account of the soldiers' lives far from the battlefield. The photograph stands as a testament to the courage and dedication of the Rifle Brigade, whose actions would shape the course of the Crimean War.
