Enthronization of Cardinal Wiseman, in St. George's Church, Lambeth, [London], 1850. Cardinal Wiseman assumes the Archiepiscopal jurisdiction of Westminster....the mitre, which had been exchanged for a scarlet cap a short time before, was formally placed upon the head of the new Archbishop, whilst the crosier, emblematic of his authority, was also placed in his hand. He was then conducted to the archiepiscopal chair, at the foot of which the whole body of the clergy made the usual obeisance - kissing the Cardinal's ring in recognition of his spiritual authority...The proceedings closed with the presentation of an address to the new "Archbishop, " and an exhortation, in which he impressed upon his clergy the duties and obligations incidental to their important mission. The mass was Haydn's, and performed by the choir in the most impressive style'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 19th century, Cardinal Nicholas Patrick Stephen Wiseman assumes his archbishopric of Westminster in a grand enthronization ceremony held at St. George's Church in Lambeth, London, in 1850. The image showcases the Cardinal, dressed in full regalia, as he receives the symbols of his new authority - the mitre and the crosier. The mitre, which had previously been exchanged for a scarlet cap, was formally placed upon the Cardinal's head, while the crosier, an emblematic representation of his authority, was placed in his hand. The Cardinal was then conducted to the archiepiscopal chair, where the entire body of the clergy paid their obeisance by kissing his ring in recognition of his spiritual authority. The proceedings concluded with the presentation of an address to the new Archbishop and an exhortation, during which he emphasized the duties and obligations inherent in their significant mission. The mass was performed by the choir in an impressive style, with Haydn's composition gracing the occasion. The photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and pomp of the Catholic Church during the 19th century. The interior of the church is adorned with ornate architecture, chandeliers, and intricate details, adding to the metaphorical and symbolic significance of the event. The Cardinal, dressed in his finery, stands out against the dark, engraved background, while the clergy and attendees are clad in their black and white apparel, reflecting the fashion of the time. The image captures the essence of the old boys network or club, as the Catholic hierarchy passed down their traditions and responsibilities from one generation to the next.
