Entrance to Balaclava Harbour, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Entrance to Balaclava Harbour, 1854. Crimean War. The town of Balaclava is situated close to the harbour, along the foot of the mountain, but it is not provided with good water. As the port is deep, sheltered by lofty mountains, and contracted towards the sea, its waters are in general as calm as those of a pond. The length of the harbour does not exceed one verst and a half, and its breadth is about 200 fathoms. The entrance is very deep; yet being confined within high rocks its channel scarcely admits two vessels to sail abreast...The old fortress, like all the strong places of the Genoese and Greeks in this peninsula is erected on inaccessible rocks, close to the mouth of the harbour, on the adjoining eastern hill. It is fortified with high walls and towers'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1854, depicts the entrance to Balaclava Harbour during the Crimean War. The harbor, located on the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine, was a strategic naval base for both British and Russian forces during the conflict. The town of Balaclava, nestled at the harbor's edge, was known for its limited water supply, but the deep, sheltered harbor provided calm waters that were essential for naval operations. The entrance to the harbor is seen here, framed by towering mountains and narrow channels. The old fortress, a Genoese and Greek relic, stands guard at the harbor's mouth, fortified with high walls and towers. The length of the harbor was only one and a half versts, with a breadth of about 200 fathoms. The entrance was deep but narrow, allowing only two vessels to pass abreast. The image captures a paddle steamer and a sailing ship making their way through the harbor, adding to the bustling activity of the scene. The fortress, with its imposing presence, serves as a reminder of the territorial disputes and military tensions that defined the Crimean War. This evocative print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of naval warfare and strategic importance.
