EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the final phase of the heroic defense of Fort Vaux during the Battle of Verdun in 1916. Fort Vaux, a key strategic position on the Western Front during World War I, was under relentless attack by German forces for over three months. In this image, soldiers can be seen entering an underground shelter within the fort, seeking refuge from the intense artillery fire and relentless assaults. The Battle of Verdun, which took place from February to December 1916, was one of the longest and deadliest engagements of the First World War, with an estimated quarter of a million casualties on both sides. The fortified town of Verdun, located in northeastern France, became a symbol of French resistance and endurance during the conflict. This photograph is from the "Collection de la Guerre IV. L'Illustration Tome CXLVIII. La Guerre Juillet, Aout, Septembre, Octobre, Novembre, Decembre 1916" and is a poignant reminder of the brutal realities of trench warfare during the First World War.
