Epsom Races - H.R.H. Prince Albert and H.R.H. Prince Frederick William of Prussia at the Grand Stand, 1856. Although there was no cheering there was no lack of curiosity to obtain a glimpse of the future husband of the eldest daughter of our beloved Queen. The Royal visitors appeared to take great interest in the race for the Derby; but perhaps what astonished them the most was the excitement of the Betting Ring, and the extraordinary coup-d'oeil presented by the immense numbers on the ground, amongst whom the utmost order everywhere prevailed. They left the course immediately after the great event was decided; and Prince Albert, before taking his departure, sent for Mr. Dorling, and personally expressed his obligation for the admirable arrangements made for the accommodation of his distinguished visitors'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1856, we find H.R.H. Prince Albert and H.R.H. Prince Frederick William of Prussia, two esteemed monarchs, enjoying a day out at the Epsom Races. The image, created by the renowned photographer W. Thomas for the Illustrated London News, captures a moment of leisure and camaraderie between the future husband of Queen Victoria and the Crown Prince of Prussia. The scene unfolds at the grandstand, where the two royals are dressed in elegant apparel, donning top hats and overcoats. They appear deeply engrossed in the Derby race, their expressions reflecting a sense of excitement and anticipation. However, what may have truly astonished them was the frenzied atmosphere of the betting ring, an experience that was likely unfamiliar to the German monarch. Despite the chaos and excitement, order prevailed amongst the immense crowd, a testament to the well-organized nature of the event. After the race, Prince Albert and Prince Frederick William left the course, with the former expressing his gratitude to the race organizers for their exceptional arrangements. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these two influential figures, providing a window into their shared interest in horseracing and their appreciation for the unique British tradition of the Epsom Races.
