Esther Pleading For Her People, 1926. Esther (born Hadassah), was a woman in the Hebrew Bible, the queen of Ahasuerus and the heroine of the Biblical Book of Esther which is named after her. As a result of Esthers intervention and influence, Persian Jews lived in Persia (modern Iran) for 2400 years thereafter. Esthers husband Ahasuerus followed in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, Cyrus the Great, in showing mercy to the Jews of Persia: Cyrus had decreed an end to the Babylonian captivity of the Jews upon his conquest of Babylon in 527 BC

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Esther Pleading For Her People, 1926" showcases the artistic brilliance of Felix Joseph Barrias. The image depicts Esther (born Hadassah), a remarkable woman from the Hebrew Bible who became the queen of Ahasuerus and an influential heroine in the Biblical Book of Esther. Esther's intervention and influence were pivotal in ensuring that Persian Jews could continue to live peacefully in Persia for over two millennia. Her husband Ahasuerus, inspired by his maternal grandfather Cyrus the Great, followed a path of mercy towards the Jewish community. Cyrus had previously ended their Babylonian captivity upon conquering Babylon in 527 BC. Barrias' painting beautifully captures this historical moment with vibrant colors and intricate details. The image portrays Esther dressed elegantly in traditional attire, her hand raised as she pleads for her people's safety. Holding a parasol above her head adds to her regal presence while symbolizing protection. The significance of this artwork extends beyond religious boundaries; it represents resilience and courage against adversity throughout history. As we admire this piece today, we are reminded of Esther's unwavering faith and determination. This extraordinary print is a testament to Barrias' talent as an artist and serves as a powerful reminder of Esther's enduring legacy within Judaism and beyond.
