Eupatoria - Jews Synagogue and Schools, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Eupatoria - Jews Synagogue and Schools, 1854. Yevpatoria is a city in Western Crimea on the Black Sea. It was the first port landed at by the allies during the Crimean War. Unpretending as the Synagogue appears, its interior indicates that the Jews must be a comparatively wealthy body here. Within the porch is a paved passuge, on one side planted with trees, leading to a tolerably large square...On the left side of this square is a Synagogue (the principal one), on the right a smaller one. Proceeding from this square you enter a large quadrangle paved with marble. The walls were covered with inscriptions in the Hebrew language, which I understood to be memorials of their worthies...They took great pride in showing us a very beautiful manuscript on vellum of the Old Testament Scriptures, and explained to us that it was of great antiquity'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

Eupatoria - Jews' Synagogue and Schools, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing photographic print depicting the Jews' Synagogue and Schools in the city of Eupatoria, Crimea. The image, created in 1854, provides a glimpse into the past of this historic city, which was the first port landed at by the allies during the Crimean War. The Synagogue, located in what was then part of Russia but is now disputed territory between Ukraine and Russia, appears unassuming from the exterior. However, as the observer moves beyond the porch, they discover a paved passage leading to a square. On the left side of the square stands the principal Synagogue, while a smaller one is located on the right. Proceeding from the square, one enters a large quadrangle paved with marble. The walls of the quadrangle are adorned with inscriptions in the Hebrew language, which the observer is told are memorials of the community's worthies. The Jews of Eupatoria took great pride in showing visitors a beautiful manuscript on vellum of the Old Testament Scriptures, which they believed to be of great antiquity. This photographic print, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, offers a unique insight into the architecture, education, and religious practices of the Jewish community in Eupatoria during the 19th century. Despite the passage of time and the many changes that have taken place in this region, this image serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural diversity that once existed in this part of the world.
