Evenings in Rome: The Antique Gallery, 1763-1764. Creator: Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808)

Evenings in Rome: The Antique Gallery, 1763-1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings features fictional characters situated near recognizable buildings and statues in Rome. On the title page, Robert dedicated the suite to Marguerite Le Compte, who visited Rome in 1764 in the company of the wealthy author and art enthusiast Claude Henri Watelet. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers, and they socialized with a group that included artists and printmakers centered at the academies in Italy. Roberts dedication was likely motivated by the hope of future patronage from Le Compte. She may be the generous woman with a hand muff depicted in The Ancient Temple, the fifth scene in this series

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Evenings in Rome: The Antique Gallery, 1763-1764" showcases the artistic brilliance of Hubert Robert, a renowned French artist from the 18th century. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings transports us to the enchanting city of Rome. In this particular scene, we are introduced to fictional characters who find themselves amidst recognizable buildings and statues that grace the streets of Rome. As we delve deeper into these etchings, we discover that Robert dedicated this series to Marguerite Le Compte, an esteemed visitor to Rome in 1764. Le Compte had accompanied Claude Henri Watelet, a wealthy author and art enthusiast during her journey. Robert's dedication is believed to have been driven by his desire for future patronage from Le Compte. Interestingly enough, she may even be depicted as one of the generous women with a hand muff in "The Ancient Temple" which is part of this remarkable series. Through these etchings, Robert not only captures the beauty and grandeur of ancient Roman architecture but also provides us with glimpses into the social circles that revolved around artists and printmakers centered at Italian academies during that era. This exquisite print serves as a testament to Hubert Robert's talent and offers viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in the timeless charm of evenings spent wandering through Rome's antique galleries.
