The Expedition against the Malays: View of the Encampment, Bandar Bahru...1876. Creator: Unknown
The Expedition against the Malays: View of the Encampment, Bandar Bahru, from the back of the Residency, 1876. Engraving after a sketch made by Major O. H. Nicolls during the Perak War. There have been some conflicts of later date with the Malays lower down the river Perak, at a place called Kota Lama, below the Residency, which is at Bandar Bahru. The force commanded by Brigadier-General Ross...attacked the village of Kota Lama, but met with an unexpected and fiercely-determined resistance. Major Hawkins was killed, with one sailor and one sepoy; four or five were wounded, one being Mr. Townsend, the surgeon'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the encampment of British forces during the Expedition against the Malays in Bandar Bahru, Perak, Malaysia, in 1876. The image, created by Major O.H. Nicolls during the Perak War, was later engraved for publication in the Illustrated London News. The scene shows the military camp nestled amidst lush vegetation, with bamboo structures and palm trees in the foreground, and the Residency, a prominent white building, visible in the background. The Expedition against the Malays was a significant military campaign during the late 19th century, with conflicts taking place along the Perak River, particularly at a place called Kota Lama, below the Residency. The British force, commanded by Brigadier-General Ross, encountered unexpected resistance during their attack on the village of Kota Lama. The engagement resulted in the death of Major Hawkins, one sailor, and one sepoy, and left several others wounded, including the surgeon, Mr. Townsend. This evocative print offers a glimpse into the historical context of the Perak War and the challenges faced by the British during their military campaigns in Malaysia. The combination of architectural elements, natural landscapes, and military presence creates a compelling visual narrative of this pivotal moment in the region's history.
