Extraordinary Accumulation of Postage Stamps, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Extraordinary Accumulation of Postage Stamps, 1850....a young lady...was to be placed in a convent, by her father, if she did not procure...one million of used postage stamps. This caused numerous persons to forward stamps for the purpose of securing her liberty. In March last, a lady...mentioned the conditions to her friends, and in a short time the lady began to receive packages by post and railway from every quarter, which poured in in such numbers, that, in ten days...she received parcels containing millions of stamps...it became necessary to give public notice...that it was urgently desired no more stamps should be sent, as the young lady had procured the number she required. The accompanying Sketch gives some idea of the packages. One of them is a large wine-hamper; another, a large wine-cooler; next, a large clothes-basket'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This extraordinary accumulation of postage stamps in the 19th century image, titled 'Extraordinary Accumulation of Postage Stamps, 1850,' is an intriguing snapshot of an unusual story that made headlines in the Illustrated London News. The photo depicts an array of parcels and baskets brimming with postage stamps, piled high and spilling over in a scene reminiscent of a harvest festival. The story began when a young lady was faced with an unexpected predicament: her father intended to send her to a convent unless she could amass one million used postage stamps. This unusual condition sparked a frenzy among the public, who eagerly sent stamps in support of the young lady's cause. In just ten days, she received an overwhelming number of parcels by post and railway from various corners of the country. The packages ranged from large wine-hampers and wine-coolers to simple clothes-baskets, all brimming with postage stamps. As the influx of stamps continued, the young lady was forced to issue a public notice requesting no more to be sent, as she had already met her quota. The image offers a glimpse into the unusual world of stamp collecting during the Victorian era, where the communication of ideas and the exchange of collectibles transcended geographical boundaries and brought people together in a shared pursuit. The 'Extraordinary Accumulation of Postage Stamps, 1850' is a fascinating reminder of the power of curiosity, the allure of collecting, and the unique ways in which the postal service connected people in the 19th century.
