EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1856, depicts the bustling scene of the Fancy Bazaar at Wellington Barracks in St. James's-Park, London. The event was organized by a committee of ladies, who had been working tirelessly for two years to provide employment and support for the wives and children of Guardsmen serving in the East. The success of their efforts led to the realization that a nursery and infant-school were essential for the younger children of the Brigade of Guards, whose mothers were often absent at work. In order to raise funds for the construction of these necessary buildings, a Grand Fancy Fair was held. Six large marquees were erected to house the bazaar, with the bands of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards providing musical entertainment each day. The Royal Standard and Union Jacks proudly flew above the scene, symbolizing the patriotic spirit of the event. The crowd, a sea of Victorian-era attire, milled about the stalls, filled with an array of goods for sale. The Fancy Bazaar was a popular attraction, drawing in large crowds from the city and beyond. The funds raised during this charitable event would go on to make a significant impact on the lives of the Guardsmen's families, providing them with much-needed support and care. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the community spirit and determination of Londoners during the 19th century. The Fancy Bazaar at Wellington Barracks stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of caring for one another.
