Previously to his election as President Soulouque (the present Emperor Faustin) was unknown to fame...His first military service consisted, in fact, in cleaning the boots of one of the illustrious black Generals. Being of an enterprising and energetic turn of mind, he relinquished the shoe-brush for the sword, and, being a man of undoubted courage, soon obtained the rank of Captain, subsequently that of General...in 1846 he was elected President...Let us now describe his Majesty: the Emperor Soulouque is a thorough "coal black, " but his nose and lips are more European than his colour might lead to expect. From the forehead to the top of his head he is completely bald. He is between fifty and sixty years of age; of large form, and very erect; is nearly six feet in height; well proportioned, though latterly inclined to corpulency'. : Faustin I, also known as Faustin Soulouque, was the Emperor of Haiti from 1847 until his overthrow in 1859. Born into slavery in Haiti, Faustin rose through the ranks of the military to become one of the most powerful leaders in the country's history. Previously unknown to fame, Faustin's first military service began as a boot cleaner for one of the black generals. His enterprising and energetic nature led him to abandon the shoe-brush for the sword, and he quickly rose through the ranks to become a captain, then a general. In 1846, Faustin was elected President of Haiti, marking a significant moment in the country's history as the first black president. During his reign, he assumed the title of Emperor in 1849, and this photograph captures him in his coronation robes from 1856. Faustin I is depicted in the image as a "thorough 'coal black'" man, but his nose and lips are more European than his skin tone might suggest. The Emperor was bald from the forehead to the top of his head, and he was between fifty and sixty years old, standing at nearly six feet tall and well proportioned, though later in life he became corpulent. Despite his humble beginnings, Faustin I's leadership and courage earned him a place in Haitian history as a significant figure in the country's struggle for independence and self-determination.
