Field-Marshal Earl Haig, 1910s, (1919). Creator: Unknown

Field-Marshal Earl Haig, 1910s, (1919). Portrait of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, British soldier and senior commander during World War I. Haig (1861-1928) was commander of the 1st Army Corps of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) at the outbreak of the war. His troops fought with distinction at Mons and the First Battle of Ypres. In 1915 Haig was promoted to Commander in Chief of the BEF, a post he held until the end of the war. His conduct of the war on the Western Front was controversial. On the one hand, his pursuit of a strategy of attrition and planning of offensives which ultimately made minimal territorial gains at the cost of massive casualties, as at the Somme (1916) and Passchendaele (1917), earned him the nickname Butcher Haig. General John J Pershing, commander of the US army in France, described Haig as the man who won the war, however. He was made a Field Marshal in 1917, and after the war served as Commander-in-Chief of Home Forces until 1921. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. VIII, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Field-Marshal Earl Haig, a prominent figure in British military history during the 1910s. The portrait captures the essence of this distinguished soldier and senior commander who played a crucial role in World War I. Field Marshal Douglas Haig (1861-1928) commanded the 1st Army Corps of the British Expeditionary Force at the outbreak of war, leading his troops with great valor at Mons and the First Battle of Ypres. In 1915, Haig was promoted to Commander in Chief of the BEF, assuming responsibility for strategic decisions throughout the conflict until its conclusion. His conduct on the Western Front stirred controversy due to his strategy of attrition and planning offensives that resulted in significant casualties but minimal territorial gains, earning him both criticism as "Butcher Haig" and praise from General John J Pershing as "the man who won the war". Bestowed with a Field Marshal title in 1917, Haig continued serving after World War I as Commander-in-Chief of Home Forces until 1921. This remarkable photograph is sourced from W. Stanley Macbean Knight's comprehensive work titled "The History of Great European War: its causes and effects" published by Caxton Publishing Company Limited in London back in 1919. Through this image, we glimpse into an era defined by immense sacrifice and leadership amidst one of history's most devastating conflicts—a testament to Field-Marshal Earl Haig's enduring legacy within military circles worldwide.
