Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 30 September 1914, (c1920). Portrait of Sir Frederick, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), photographed on his eighty-second birthday, shortly before his death on 14 November 1914. Roberts (1832-1914) was one of the foremost British military figures of Victorian times. He fought in the Second Afghan War of 1878-1880, in the Boer Wars in South Africa, and was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army.
