The Fight for the Standard at Pinkie, 10 September 1547, (c1880). The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, took place on 10 September 1547 on the banks of the River Esk near Musselburgh, Scotland. On the morning of Saturday, 10 September, Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset (1500-1552) advanced his army to close up with the detachment at Inveresk. The last pitched battle between Scottish and English armies was part of the conflict known as the Rough Wooing, and is considered the first modern battle in the British Isles.
