The Finsbury Election: the Hustings on Clerkenwell-Green: the Nominations, 1857. Creator: Unknown
The Finsbury Election: the Hustings on Clerkenwell-Green: the Nominations, 1857. At the close of the poll at four o'clock at least 10, 000 persons had assembled...in the hope of hearing an address from some of the candidates, more especially those who were understood to be successful; but they were doomed to disappointment, and, to make up for this shortcoming, an "independent" elector made a speech from the window of Mr. Cox's committee-room, the Crown Tavern, which appeared to have such an exciting effect upon his auditory that several fights took place, and the uproar was only quelled by the interference of the police. It is said that the return of Mr. Cox will be petitioned against - upon the ground that he has employed paid canvassers. The opinion of counsel...is, that such a proceeding is an act of bribery'. Dunscombe [sic] and Cox were elected. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Finsbury Election: the Hustings on Clerkenwell-Green: the Nominations, 1857', offers a fascinating glimpse into the chaotic world of Victorian-era politics. The photograph, though the creator remains unknown, was published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, providing a firsthand account of the election proceedings in the Finsbury constituency. The scene unfolds on Clerkenwell-Green, where a large crowd of at least 10,000 people had gathered in anticipation of addresses from the successful candidates. However, their hopes were dashed as none of the candidates appeared, leading to frustration and unrest among the crowd. In an attempt to quell the growing tension, an 'independent' elector took it upon himself to speak from the window of Mr. Cox's committee-room, the Crown Tavern. His speech, though well-received initially, soon escalated into several fights, causing an uproar that could only be contained by the intervention of the police. The election results saw Dunscombe and Cox emerge as winners, but their victories were not without controversy. Reports suggested that Cox had employed paid canvassers, an act that was widely considered bribery. The opinion of counsel, as reported in the Illustrated London News, was that such a practice constituted an act of bribery, and a petition against Cox's return was expected. This photograph provides a unique insight into the tumultuous nature of elections during this period, highlighting the passion, tension, and controversy that surrounded the democratic process in Victorian England.
