Fire at Boston - from a drawing by Mr. W. Caister, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Fire at Boston - from a drawing by Mr. W. Caister, 1844. The Boston Herald:the town of Boston [Massachusetts] was visited by a most awful conflagration, which broke out in the oil and colour warehouse of Mr. T. Slator, ship chandler and general dealer, in South-street, which spread with great rapidity, and involved a mass of valuable property in ruin. The six town engines were speedily on the spot; the tide was high, and no deficiency of water therefore existed, but all the engines were destitute of suction-pipes, excepting one, which was not of length sufficient to reach the water...Suddenly an explosion of gunpowder took place. The whole of the front of Mr. Slators house was blown out, some of the bricks being actually propelled across the river, and a mass of ruins and burning embers falling among the crowd. Mr. Duggans granary...was now a mass of flame, and vast quantities of wheat and other grain burned to ashes. The total loss or property consumed, cannot be less than £ 10, 000. Fire at Boston - from a drawing by Mr. W. Caister, 1844
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the devastating fire that engulfed the town of Boston, Massachusetts in 1844. The image, based on a drawing by Mr. W. Caister, provides a haunting glimpse into the chaos and destruction caused by this awful conflagration. The fire originated in the oil and colour warehouse of Mr. T. Slator, a ship chandler and general dealer located on South Street. With alarming speed, the flames spread throughout the area, consuming valuable properties in their path. Despite the prompt arrival of six town engines and an abundance of water due to high tide conditions, there was a critical shortage of suction-pipes for all but one engine which proved insufficiently long to reach water sources nearby. Amidst this desperate situation, tragedy struck when an explosion rocked Mr. Slator's house as gunpowder ignited within its walls. The forceful blast propelled bricks across the river while raining down ruins and burning embers upon terrified onlookers. As if things could not worsen further, Mr Duggans' granary succumbed to relentless flames with vast quantities of wheat and other grains turning into ashes before anyone's eyes. The total loss incurred from this catastrophic event is estimated to be no less than £10,000 – an astronomical figure for that time period. This poignant photograph serves as a stark reminder of both human vulnerability in face of nature's fury and our resilience in rebuilding after such calamities.
