First Sale of Sugar in the Market Square of D'Urban, Port Natal, 1856. Creator: Unknown
First Sale of Sugar in the Market Square of D'Urban, Port Natal, 1856. Durban, South Africa: The waggons contain the sugar in bags; and one of the proprietors, Mr. H. Milner, J.P. of Springfield, with helmet hat; as well as the auctioneer, Mr. Acutt, who patriotically rendered his services gratuitously on the occasion, are...standing on one of the waggons...the prices realised for the whole averaged more than 30s. per cwt. The natives...are not as yet well adapted for this kind of labour, and their peculiar habits and customs render them unwilling to engage in protracted service. This difficulty...is in course of removal, by the improving processes to which the coloured population are now subjected...the planters are taking measures for meeting the...exigency, by means of a limited immigration of suitable labourers from the East - such as those by whom...the sugar estates of Mauritius are worked. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "First Sale of Sugar in the Market Square of D'Urban, Port Natal, 1856," depicts an historic moment in the early history of Durban, South Africa. The image captures the excitement of the first sugar sale in the market square, with wagons laden with sugar bags at the center. Among the crowd, two distinguished gentlemen, Mr. H. Milner, J.P. of Springfield, and the auctioneer, Mr. Acutt, are prominently featured, standing on one of the wagons. The successful sale of sugar, with prices averaging over 30 shillings per hundredweight, was a significant milestone for the burgeoning sugar industry in the region. The native population, however, was not yet adequately prepared for this kind of labor, and their unique customs and habits made them reluctant to commit to prolonged service. To address this challenge, the planters were taking steps to import suitable laborers from the East, such as those who worked on the sugar estates of Mauritius. This photograph is a testament to the determination and innovation of the early settlers in Durban, who overcame obstacles to establish a thriving sugar industry. The image was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1856, providing a valuable record of this important moment in the history of Durban.
