The Firth of the Thames, Waitemata, and Tamaki, and Gulf of Hauraki, Auckland, New Zealand... 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Firth of the Thames, Waitemata, and Tamaki, and Gulf of Hauraki, Auckland, New Zealand, as seen from the Howick Ranges - from a drawing by Major Stack, 1862. View after a sketch by Frederick R. Stack, late Major of Brigade at Auckland, ...overlooking the pensioner settlement of Howick...The road in the foreground is at the entrance to the forest leading to the Wairoa Valley. The forest trees are chopped down, sawn into logs of the required length, and conveyed to sawpits on wooden trucks drawn by teams of oxen. Land in such localities, being difficult of access, in consequence of its hilly nature, although covered with magnificent timber and possessing charming views of wood and water, can be bought for from £1 to £3 an acre. Many forty-acre emigrants have gree grants in this vicinity, and, by the aid of fire to burn off the underwood and the axe to fell the large trees, they soon convert patches in the primitive forest into gardens and pasture lands'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 1862 photograph print captures a breathtaking view of The Firth of the Thames, Waitemata, and Tamaki, and Gulf of Hauraki, as seen from the Howick Ranges in Auckland, New Zealand. The image is based on a drawing by Major Frederick R. Stack, who was a late brigade major at Auckland at the time. The vantage point of the photograph offers a panoramic perspective of the vast body of water, dotted with ships and small boats, surrounded by lush green forests and rolling hills. The road in the foreground leads to the Wairoa Valley, where the forest trees have been chopped down and sawed into logs using teams of oxen. The land in this area, although challenging to access due to its hilly terrain, is covered in magnificent timber and offers charming views of wood and water. Despite the difficult terrain, the land could be purchased for a relatively low price, from £1 to £3 an acre. Many forty-acre emigrant grants were given in this vicinity, and with the aid of fire to burn off undergrowth and the axe to fell large trees, settlers soon transformed patches of the primitive forest into thriving gardens and pasture lands. This photograph provides a unique glimpse into the early settlement of Auckland and the transformation of the New Zealand landscape by European settlers. The image is a testament to the determination and resourcefulness of the early settlers who sought to make a new life in this beautiful but challenging land.
