Fishmen on the Lake Zaisan, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Fishmen on the Lake Zaisan, 1909. This image is from Vidy territorii Sibirskogo kazach'ego voiska (Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Fishmen on the Lake Zaisan, 1909," transports us back in time to the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. The image is part of a collection called "Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host," which was exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911.
Taken by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev during his journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai, this photo captures a group of fishermen engaged in their daily activities on Lake Zaisan. Standing proudly on their boats along the coast, these men epitomize both strength and resilience as they navigate through life's challenges.
The heritage art depicted here reflects not only historical significance but also offers a glimpse into the rich culture and way of life prevalent among the Cossacks living in this region during that era. Their traditional attire adds an authentic touch to this still image frozen in time.
As we delve deeper into this photograph's details, we can observe fishing nets draped across some boats while others are empty or filled with fish caught earlier that day. This scene highlights not only their dependence on fishing for sustenance but also showcases their expertise honed over generations.
The serene beauty of Lake Zaisan serves as a backdrop for this remarkable moment captured by Katanaev's lens. Its calm waters mirror both nature's tranquility and man's industriousness coexisting harmoniously within its boundaries.
Preserved by the Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife, this photograph allows us to connect with our past while appreciating how far we have come since then. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity amidst challenging environments—a timeless reminder that history continues to shape our present reality.
