EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Flight of Rookwood, 1897" captures a pivotal moment in history with remarkable detail and satirical humor. Created by John Leech as part of "The Comic History of England" this image transports us back to the 17th century. Ambrose Rookwood, a member of the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, takes center stage in this scene. Fleeing London on horseback, he races against time to warn his fellow conspirators about Guy Fawkes' arrest before their plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament is foiled. The tension and urgency are palpable as Rookwood's fate hangs in the balance. Leech's illustrations brilliantly convey both historical accuracy and comedic elements. His attention to detail brings out the essence of each character, while his use of satire adds an entertaining twist to this dark chapter in British history. The monochrome aesthetic further enhances the dramatic atmosphere surrounding Rookwood's daring escape. This print serves as a reminder not only of Ambrose Rookwood's role in one of Britain's most notorious conspiracies but also highlights Leech's artistic prowess and ability to blend history with humor. It stands as a testament to the enduring power that visual art holds in capturing significant moments from our past for generations to come.
