Floating Ice off Cape Adare, c1908, (1909)

Floating Ice off Cape Adare, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of floating ice off Cape Adare, taken around 1908 during Ernest Shackleton's second Antarctic expedition. Shackleton, an Anglo-Irish explorer, is renowned for his remarkable achievements in polar exploration. During this particular expedition from 1907 to 1909, he and three companions set a new record by reaching the Farthest South latitude at an astonishing 88° S – a mere 97 geographical miles away from the elusive South Pole. This feat marked the largest advancement towards the pole in history. In addition to their incredible journey, members of Shackleton's team also conquered Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. The photograph showcases not only the vast expanse of icy terrain but also highlights the immense challenges faced by these brave explorers as they navigated through treacherous waters surrounded by towering icebergs. Ernest Shackleton was honored with knighthood by King Edward VII for his extraordinary accomplishments in polar exploration. Tragically, he met his untimely demise during his third and final oceanographic and sub-Antarctic expedition at just 47 years old. This illustration is sourced from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I authored by E. H. Shackleton himself and published in London in 1909 by William Heinemann. It serves as a poignant reminder of both Shackleton's indomitable spirit and his enduring legacy within the realm of exploration.
