Fort St John, Dubrovnik, Croatia
Fort St John, Dubrovnik, Croatia, 21st century. Fort St John was built in the 16th century to protect the harbour of Dubrovnik. The Adriatic port of Dubrovnik was founded by Roman refugees in the 7th century, and came under Byzantine rule after the fall of the Roman Empire. The city developed into a trading power and was an important centre of Slavic art and literature in the 15th-17th century. From the 14th century Dubrovnik was an independent city state, but it fell to Napoleon in 1808, after which the city passed to Austrian administration in 1815 and Yugoslavian in 1918. Dubrovnik was bombarded by the Serbs during Croatias struggle for independence in 1991-1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Fort St John, a historic fortress located in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Built during the 16th century with the primary purpose of safeguarding the city's harbor, this magnificent structure stands as a testament to Dubrovnik's rich and eventful past. Dubrovnik itself has a fascinating history that dates back to Roman times when it was founded by refugees fleeing the fall of the Roman Empire. Over centuries, it flourished into a prominent trading hub and became renowned for its contributions to Slavic art and literature during the 15th-17th century. The city-state enjoyed independence from the 14th century until Napoleon's conquest in 1808. Subsequently, Dubrovnik came under Austrian administration in 1815 before becoming part of Yugoslavia in 1918. Unfortunately, more recent turbulent times marred this picturesque coastal town. During Croatia's struggle for independence from Yugoslavia in 1991-1992, Dubrovnik faced intense bombardment by Serbian forces. However, amidst these challenges, Fort St John still stands tall as an enduring symbol of resilience and protection. Its commanding presence against the backdrop of crystal-clear Adriatic waters serves as a reminder of both historical significance and architectural grandeur. This stunning image captured by Vivienne Sharp beautifully encapsulates not only Croatia's natural beauty but also its cultural heritage and fortitude throughout centuries of change.
