Founding of the The New School at Loughborough - the Procession, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Founding of the The New School at Loughborough, [Leicestershire] - the Procession, 1850. A procession was then formed to the School grounds. Probably at no period in the town's history was such a heart-stirring sight as this ever beheld. The fine band of the 1st Royal Dragoons preceded...The entrance lodge was surmounted by an arch of evergreens, bearing, in floral mosaic, the word Welcome". This was, indeed, no unmeaning word here; for not only were the hosts of juveniles regaled with tea and cake on the lawn, but the public, calculated at fifteen thousand, freely admitted and welcomed with an old English hospitality rarely if ever surpassed....The Lord Bishop of Peterborough, who is not only a native of Loughborough, but was a distinguished pupil of the former school, founded from the estates of the same beneficent donor, kindly consented to lay the stone'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the momentous occasion of the founding of The New School at Loughborough, Leicestershire in 1850. The image depicts a grand procession making its way towards the school grounds, led by the fine band of the 1st Royal Dragoons. The entrance to the school is adorned with an arch of evergreens, bearing the word "Welcome," a fitting greeting for the hosts of juveniles and the public, estimated at fifteen thousand, who were freely admitted and warmly welcomed with old English hospitality. The Lord Bishop of Peterborough, a native of Loughborough and a distinguished pupil of the former school, graciously consented to lay the foundation stone. The Bishop, dressed in his religious attire, is seen in the procession, carrying the cross and holding a Bible. The crowd, a sea of men, women, and children, eagerly watch the proceedings, some waving Union Jacks and Union flags, while others hold banners and standards. The print, published in the Illustrated London News, captures the metaphorical "opening of the mouth" of the new school, symbolizing the start of a new era in education for the people of Loughborough. This historic moment in time is a testament to the power of community, faith, and the pursuit of knowledge.
