French submarine Surcouf, 20th century. Artist: Albert Sebille

French submarine Surcouf, 20th century. Launched in 1934, the Surcouf was the largest submarine in the world at the outbreak of World War II. After France's defeat by Germany in 1940, she was captured by the British and transferred to the Free French Navy. The Surcouf was sunk with all hands on 18 February 1942. It was reported that she collided with an American freighter, but a later French investigation stated that she was sunk by US aircraft in a friendly fire incident

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting by Albert Sebille captures the French submarine "Surcouf" in all its glory during the early 20th century. Launched in 1934, the Surcouf was the largest submarine in the world at the onset of World War II, measuring an impressive 90 meters in length. With a displacement of over 3,000 tons and carrying ten 550mm torpedo tubes, the Surcouf was a formidable weapon of the French Navy. At the time of France's defeat by Germany in 1940, the Surcouf was captured by the British and subsequently transferred to the Free French Navy. Tragically, on 18 February 1942, the submarine was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, with all hands lost. The cause of the sinking remains a subject of debate; some reports suggest a collision with an American freighter, while others indicate a friendly fire incident by US aircraft. This painting, created in the 1930s, offers a glimpse into a bygone era of naval warfare. The vibrant colors and intricate details bring the Surcouf to life, showcasing her sleek design and powerful weaponry. The painting's composition, with the submarine anchored against a backdrop of open sea, highlights the isolation and secrecy inherent in submarine warfare. The geographical feature in the background, with its rocky cliffs and crashing waves, adds a sense of drama and mystery to the scene. Overall, this beautiful watercolor painting by Albert Sebille is a testament to the history and allure of the French submarine Surcouf.
