The Garratt Election, (c1878). Creator: Unknown
The Garratt Election, (c1878). 18th century scene showing the Garrat Elections held at Garrat, then a small hamlet in Wandsworth, (now part of greater London). The elections were: A ludicrous ceremony, practiced every new parliament: it consists of a mock election of two members to represent the borough of Garret...The qualification of a voter is, having enjoyed a woman, in the open air, within that district: the candidates are commonly fellows of low humor, who dress themselves up in a ridiculous manner. As this brings a prodigious concourse of people to Wandsworth, the publicans of that place jointly contribute to the expense, which is sometimes considerable. From Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, And Its Places. The Southern Suburbs, Volume VI, by Edward Walford. [Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. London, Paris & New York, c1878]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Garratt Election, (c1878): A Hilarious Spectacle of Mockery and Merriment". This print captures a scene from the famous Garrat Elections held in the 18th century at Garrat, a small hamlet in Wandsworth, now part of greater London. The image showcases the ludicrous ceremony that took place during every new parliament - a mock election to represent the borough of Garret. The photograph reveals a crowd gathered in anticipation, witnessing candidates dressed up in ridiculous attire. These fellows of low humor were known for their comical antics as they vied for votes. However, what truly sets this event apart is its unique qualification for voters: having enjoyed a woman outdoors within that district. As depicted by this intriguing snapshot, the Garrat Elections attracted an enormous concourse of people to Wandsworth. To cover the considerable expenses incurred by hosting such an extravagant affair, publicans from the area joined forces and contributed jointly. This historical image provides us with a fascinating glimpse into British entertainment during this era. It reflects both the vibrant carnival-like atmosphere and societal norms prevalent at that time. Preserved through Edward Walford's publication "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People And Its Places" this remarkable print serves as a testament to our rich cultural heritage. With its monochrome charm and intricate details captured by an unknown creator, it invites us to delve into Victorian England's peculiar pastimes while marveling at their eccentricity.
