EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Garrison Police of the 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers in Rangoon, Burma, back in 1913. The Royal Munster Fusiliers was a renowned infantry regiment of the British Army, with their home depot located in Tralee, Ireland. Originally formed by merging two regiments of the former East India Company in 1881, they served both in India and during World War I. The image showcases a proud group of uniformed police officers standing against a sturdy brick wall backdrop. Their direct gazes convey an air of determination and discipline as they fulfill their duty to maintain law and order within this distant Asian country. This photograph provides us with a glimpse into the early 20th century world where colonial powers like Britain exerted influence across different corners of the globe. As we reflect on this historical moment frozen in time, it is important to acknowledge that following Ireland's independence from British rule in 1922, regiments tied to its counties were disbanded—including those traditionally associated with recruiting grounds for the Royal Munster Fusiliers. Preserved within an album titled "1st Royal Munster Fusillers, Rangoon, 1913" this monochrome print serves as a poignant reminder of not only military history but also societal changes that have shaped nations over time. It stands as a testament to the bravery and dedication exhibited by these soldiers who played their part during World War I while stationed far away from their homeland.
