Gates of the King's Palace, Naples, 1860. Creator: W Thomas
Gates of the King's Palace, Naples, 1860. This Royal palace was begun in 1600, by the command of Philip III. in the viceroyalty of the Count de Lemos, from the designs of Domenico Fontana, and is considered the masterpiece of that architect. The front, five hundred and twenty feet long, presents the Doric, Ionic, and Composite orders in the pilasters of its three stories; the Doric of the ground story, in Fontana's design, formed an open portico, with three entrances flanked by columns of granite from the Isola del Giglio. Many of the arches have been walled up to give solidity to the building. The first and second floors have each twenty-one windows. The principal court has a double row of porticos. The palace was partly destroyed by fire in 1837, and has been since repaired and enlarged especially towards the Piazza di San Carlo, where a garden has been planted, and two colossal bronze horses, presented to his Majesty by the late Emperor of Russia, in recollection of his reception in Italy in 1844. These statues are by Russian artists, and cast in St. Petersburg'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by W. Thomas in 1860, showcases the majestic Gates of the King's Palace in Naples, Italy. The palace, which began construction in 1600 under the command of Philip III and the viceroyalty of the Count de Lemos, is a testament to the architectural brilliance of Domenico Fontana. The front facade, measuring 520 feet long, is a stunning display of the Doric, Ionic, and Composite orders in its pilasters. The ground story features the Doric order, with three entrances flanked by granite columns from the Isola del Giglio. The palace, considered a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, originally had an open portico with three entrances. However, many of the arches have been walled up to add solidity to the building. The first and second floors each have twenty-one windows, and the principal court boasts a double row of porticos. Tragically, the palace suffered significant damage by fire in 1837 and has since been repaired and enlarged, particularly towards the Piazza di San Carlo. A garden was planted, and two colossal bronze horses were added as a gift from the late Emperor of Russia in remembrance of his reception in Italy in 1844. These statues, cast in St. Petersburg, are the work of Russian artists and add to the palace's grandeur. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, offers a glimpse into the rich history and beauty of the Gates of the King's Palace in Naples, a must-see destination for architecture enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
