This distinguished officer, who has succeeded the late Marshal St. Arnaud in the chief command of the French forces in the Crimea, is descended from an excellent family...On the 14th of January, 1853, he was appointed General of Division. Three months afterwards he was called to the command of a Division of infantry at the Camp of Helfaut. He was next placed at the head of the First Division of the Army of the East, where he took an active part in the operation of the debarkation, and in contributing powerfully to the success at [The Battle of the] Alma, where he received a wound; and at the Battle of Inkerman, on November 5, while heading the impetuous charge of the Zouaves, he had a horse killed under him, and was slightly wounded'. In January 1853, he was appointed as a General of Division. Three months later, he was entrusted with commanding a Division of infantry at the Camp of Helfaut. Subsequently, he led the First Division of the Army of the East, where he played a pivotal role in the successful debarkation and the battles of Alma and Inkerman. At the Battle of Alma on September 20, 1854, Canrobert played an active part in the operation and contributed significantly to the French victory. He received a wound during the battle. Three months later, on November 5, at the Battle of Inkerman, Canrobert led the impetuous charge of the Zouaves. During this charge, a horse was killed under him, and he sustained a slight wound.
