The "George Stephenson" locomotive engine built at Hamilton, Canada West, for the Great Western Railway of Canada, 1860. Mr. F.W. Gates, one of the directors; Mr. Thomas Reynolds, financial director; Mr. Brydges, managing director; Mr. G.H. Mingaye, paymaster; Mr. Richard Eaton, locomotive superintendent; Mr. W.C. Stephens, secretary in Canada; Mr. George Forsyth, [designer; Mr. A. Ayres, mechanical draughtsman, standing in front of] an engine of great power and beauty of workmanship...appropriately named after the father of railways...The cylinders are 16 inches in diameter, with a 24-inch stroke. The total heating surface, by an ingenious arrangement of the firebox, is 1218 superficial feet...it is adapted to burn either coal or wood...the framing is made from old scrap iron about the works reforged by steamhammer...The driving-wheels are six in number, coupled by threes...Forsyth...stands under the tender, with his hands in his velveteen jacket - a true specimen of the English mechanic...It will be observed that a roof covers the footplate where the engine-driver and stoker usually stand, rendered necessary from the inclemency of the winter and from the heat of the summer'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the "George Stephenson" locomotive engine, built at Hamilton, Canada West, in 1860 for the Great Western Railway of Canada. The engine's impressive design and craftsmanship are evident in the image, with several key figures of the railway industry gathered around it. Among them are Mr. F.W. Gates, Mr. Thomas Reynolds, Mr. Brydges, Mr. G.H. Mingaye, Mr. Richard Eaton, Mr. W.C. Stephens, Mr. George Forsyth, and Mr. A. Ayres. Forsyth, the designer, stands proudly in front of the engine, his hands in his velveteen jacket, a true embodiment of the English mechanic. The engine's impressive specifications include cylinders that are 16 inches in diameter with a 24-inch stroke, a total heating surface of 1218 superficial feet, and the ability to burn either coal or wood. The framing of the engine is made from old scrap iron, reforged by steamhammer, and the driving-wheels are six in number, coupled by threes. A roof covers the footplate where the engine-driver and stoker usually stand, a necessary addition due to the inclemency of the Canadian winter and the heat of the summer. This photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the innovation and determination of the railway industry in Canada during the 19th century.
