German Renaissance wall painting and ornament in stone and wood, (1898). Creator: Unknown

German Renaissance wall painting and ornament in stone and wood, (1898). Figs 1-8: Portions of painted frescoes in the Church at Freudenstadt...the interior of the celebrated Church at Freudenstadt, built by the Ducal Architect Heinrich Schickhardt, of Herrenberg, and the examples on our plate are sufficient witness of its rich and magnificent decoration. In the detail of this splendid composition by the painter Jakob Zuberlein we observe a capricious and rather wild imagination...but when we see how agreeable and harmonious is the impression produced by the rich colouring of the decoration and details, we cannot but pay high respect to this period of Art, the more so as at that time the aim in the decoration of Protestant churches was to break with the old traditions, and to create new forms on entirely rational principles - an experiment which was attended with marked success in the Church at Freudenstadt. The Stadtkirche Freudenstadt, designed by Heinrich Schickhardt, was completed in 1615. Plate 78a from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the German Renaissance era, specifically showcasing the remarkable wall painting and ornamentation in stone and wood. The image captures portions of painted frescoes found within the renowned Church at Freudenstadt, a masterpiece crafted by the talented Ducal Architect Heinrich Schickhardt. The unknown creator of this photograph allows us to appreciate the rich and magnificent decoration that adorns every corner of this historic church. Figs 1-8 provide a glimpse into its opulent interior, revealing intricate details that testify to the skillful craftsmanship of its time. One cannot help but be drawn to the detail captured in this splendid composition by painter Jakob Zuberlein. With a capricious and somewhat wild imagination on display, it is fascinating how these elements come together harmoniously. The vibrant colors used in both decoration and details create an agreeable impression that demands our respect for this period of Art. What makes this particular church even more exceptional is its departure from traditional norms. During Protestant Reformation times, there was a deliberate effort to break away from old traditions and establish new forms based on rational principles. This experimental approach proved highly successful in creating something unique within the Church at Freudenstadt. Designed by Heinrich Schickhardt himself, Stadtkirche Freudenstadt stands as a testament to his architectural brilliance. Completed in 1615, it continues to inspire awe with its timeless beauty even today. Plate 78a from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from H. Dolmetsch's original German text provides valuable insight into this historical gem captured forever through photography.
