Goodwood Races: the Chesterfield Cup - Leonora and the Spectre Lover, 1865. Creator: Unknown
Goodwood Races: the Chesterfield Cup - Leonora and the Spectre Lover, 1865. One of the silver cups, '...or pieces of plate, which formed the principal prizes won at Goodwood races last week. The Stewards' Cup [or the Chesterfield Cup?], manufactured by Messrs, London and Ryder, New Bond-street, is massive in form and elaborately ornamented. The designer, Mr. Robert Jefferson, has taken his subject from Burger's ballad of "Leonora;" and the lid is surmounted by an equestrian group of miniature statuary, which represents the midnight ride of the poor maiden with her spectral lover. The handles are formed of the attendant angels who intercede for Leonora, and at the base are smiling cupids entwined with passionflowers, all made to illustrate the mournful story'. In this photograph from 1865, a stunning silver trophy takes center stage. The Chesterfield Cup, manufactured by London and Ryder, is an exquisite example of craftsmanship and artistry. Designed by Robert Jefferson, the cup tells the mournful story of Leonora's midnight ride with her spectral lover, inspired by Gottfried August Burger's ballad.
The lid features a miniature equestrian group depicting this ghostly encounter, while the handles are shaped like angels interceding on behalf of Leonora. At the base, smiling Cupids entwined with passionflowers add to the cup's ornate beauty. This masterpiece was one of several silver cups and trophies awarded at Goodwood races in 1865.
The Illustrated London News published this photograph, showcasing not only a remarkable piece of craftsmanship but also a glimpse into Victorian-era culture and society.
