EDITORS COMMENTS
Grand Duchess Marie Paulovna, formerly Princess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, is depicted in this stunning head-and-shoulders portrait from the late 1870s. The Grand Duchess, who was born in Germany, was the daughter of Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Princess Anne of Anhalt. In 1891, she married Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia, making her a member of the Russian Imperial Family. The Grand Duchess' elegant attire in the portrait reflects the fashion trends of the time. Her high-necked, long-sleeved dress is adorned with intricate lace detailing and a pearl necklace adds a touch of sophistication to her look. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, with a pearl earring dangling from each ear. The Grand Duchess' portrait was likely taken during a visit to Siberia, where her husband was serving as the Viceroy at the time. The meeting of frontiers between Europe and Asia is reflected in her dual heritage as a German princess married to a Russian grand duke. This photograph is a beautiful example of 19th century portrait photography and a testament to the grandeur and elegance of the Russian Imperial Court. The image is from the Library of Congress and is a valuable addition to any collection of historical portraits or Russian royalty.
