Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville - A Distinguished British Liberal Statesman
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the esteemed figure of Granville Leveson-Gower, the 2nd Earl Granville. A prominent British Liberal statesman of the late 19th century, his influence and contributions to politics were significant. Born in 1815, Lord Granville held various ministerial positions within Liberal governments during this transformative era. Notably, as vice-president of the Board of Trade in 1848, he played a pivotal role in promoting the iconic Great Exhibition of 1851—an event that celebrated innovation and industry. However, it was his tenure as Foreign Secretary under Gladstone's administrations that truly defined his legacy. Serving two separate terms from 1870-1874 and again from 1880-1885, Lord Granville skillfully navigated international diplomacy with finesse and intellect. The lithograph itself is a testament to both its subject's importance and artistic craftsmanship. Created by Cassell, Petter & Galpin for The Modern Portrait Gallery around c1890, it captures Lord Granville's dignified presence with remarkable detail and vibrant colors. As we gaze upon this striking portrait today, we are reminded not only of Lord Granville's political prowess but also his commitment to liberalism—a philosophy that championed individual freedom and progress. His enduring impact on Victorian politics continues to inspire generations who strive for a more inclusive society governed by principles of justice and equality.
