Harp of Queen Mary of Scots, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Harp of Queen Mary of Scots, 1850. "It had in front of the upper arm the Queen's portrait and the arms of Scotland, both in gold. On the right side...in the circular space, near the upper end of the fore-arm, was placed a jewel of considerable value, and on the opposite side, in a similar circular space, was fixed another precious stone, of all which it was despoiled in the Rebellion, 1745, either by the persons to whose care the Harp had been at that time confided, or, as those people asserted, had been taken away by the soldiers during the existence of these troubles", From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts the Harp of Queen Mary, Queen of Scots, as it appeared in the mid-19th century. The harp, believed to be from the 16th century, is a significant historical artifact, adorned with gold decorations and the arms of Scotland. The upper arm of the harp features a portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots, adding to its regal appearance. The harp's history is steeped in intrigue and mystery. Two precious stones, one on each side of the harp, were once placed in circular spaces near the upper end of the forearm. These valuable gems, a jewel and a precious stone, were lost during the Rebellion of 1745. The circumstances surrounding their disappearance are unclear. Some believe they were taken by those in charge of the harp's care during the rebellion, while others assert that they were seized by the soldiers themselves. This print of the Harp of Queen Mary, Queen of Scots, was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850. The newspaper, a leading publication of the Victorian era, showcased the harp's intricate design and historical significance to its readers. The print, a testament to the harp's enduring allure, remains an intriguing piece of both musical and historical interest.
