Heavy lifting gear at Hickleton Main pit, Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, 1961. Artist

Heavy lifting gear at Hickleton Main pit, Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, 1961. A Coles Crane operated by Mobile Lifting Services was brought in to lift heavy girders during the refurbishment work on Hickleton Main Pit in July 1961. The pit was sunk in 1892 and the Barnsley seam was worked from there for the next 63 years. By the mid 1930s it employed over 4100 men, of whom 3300 worked underground and the annual output from the pit was one million tons. After its closure, the shafts were filled in and the surface buildings demolished in 1994

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heavy lifting gear at Hickleton Main pit in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, back in 1961. The artist, Michael Walters of Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , beautifully showcases a Coles Crane operated by Mobile Lifting Services during the refurbishment work on this historic pit. Hickleton Main Pit holds a rich history as it was sunk in 1892 and played a vital role in the coal industry for over six decades. At its peak in the mid-1930s, it employed an impressive workforce of over 4,100 men, with most toiling underground to extract one million tons of coal annually. The image not only highlights the industrial prowess of this era but also pays homage to the skilled workers who labored tirelessly within these collieries. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we can almost feel their dedication and determination permeating through each pixel. Sadly, after years of service to fuel Britain's progress, Hickleton Main Pit closed its doors. In 1994, its shafts were filled and surface buildings demolished; however, photographs like these serve as reminders of our shared heritage. Through monochrome artistry and meticulous attention to detail captured by Michael Walters' lens, we are transported back to an era when heavy machinery like cranes symbolized progress and prosperity for communities reliant on mining industries. This photograph stands as a testament to both human resilience and technological advancements that shaped South Yorkshire's history forever.
