EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning woodcut print, created by Gabriel Salmon around 1528, depicts the legendary Greek hero Hercules in the midst of slaying the Lernaean Hydra. The image is part of a series of prints from Salmon's "Scenes from the Life of Hercules." Hercules, depicted here in his prime, stands boldly over the monstrous hydra, a serpentine creature with multiple heads. With raw strength and determination, Hercules wields a large club, striking the head of the hydra that is closest to him. As he does so, two new heads emerge from the stump of the one he has just destroyed. The background is filled with chaos, as Hercules' companions, identified as Iolaus and Amphitryon, attempt to keep the heads from regrowing by burning them with torches. The woodcut is a testament to the brutality and violence inherent in Greek mythology, as well as the heroic feats and strength of the legendary hero Hercules. This print, with its intricate detail and bold lines, is a masterpiece of 16th century French art and a valuable addition to any art collection or gallery.
