Hide Shirt, c. 1890. Creator: Unknown

Hide Shirt, c. 1890. Scalp shirts are among the most spectacular garmets produced by the Plains Indians. Lakota Sioux scalp shirts were often painted blue or green on the upper half (to symbolize the sky) and yellow on the lower half (indicating the earth). The locks of hair attached to the shirt are not actually scalps. Instead they were usually donated by family members or friends. Each lock represents a war exploit performed by the shirts owner. Additional ornamentation was provided by panels of Venetian glass beads, sewn to the leather with sinew thread. During the Reservation Period (after 1870) warfare ceased, and scalp shirts became items of formal or ceremonial attire

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of Plains Indian craftsmanship - the Hide Shirt, dating back to around 1890. The creator of this extraordinary garment remains unknown, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to its story. Scalp shirts like this one were considered among the most awe-inspiring garments produced by the Lakota Sioux people. This particular shirt features a striking color scheme, with blue or green pigment adorning the upper half to symbolize the vast sky above, while yellow hues on the lower half represent the earth below. Contrary to popular belief, the locks of hair attached to this hide shirt are not actual scalps but rather donated strands from family members or friends. Each lock represents a courageous act performed in battle by its owner, serving as a testament to their bravery and prowess. The intricate ornamentation is another notable aspect of this hide shirt. Panels of Venetian glass beads have been meticulously sewn onto the leather using sinew thread, enhancing its visual appeal and cultural significance. During a period known as Reservation Period after 1870 when warfare ceased among Native American tribes, scalp shirts transformed into items worn for formal occasions or ceremonial events. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection today, this photograph allows us to appreciate and admire both the artistic mastery and historical importance embodied in this stunning example of Lakota Sioux heritage art.
