EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 11th century detail of the Hindu Goddess Kali, originally from India or Southeast Asia, showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the unknown artist who brought this divine figure to life. Carved from copper alloy, the goddess is depicted with four arms, each holding a symbolic object: a trishula in her main right hand, a discus in her upper left hand, a bowl filled with the elixir of life in her lower left hand, and her lower right hand in the mudra of granting boons. Her body is adorned with various ornaments, including a diadem, necklaces, bracelets, and anklets. Her long, flowing hair is adorned with a crown of skulls, symbolizing her role as the destroyer of evil. Her fiery eyes and open mouth, displaying a tongue, convey her fierce and wrathful nature. This figurine, now housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Hinduism and the intricate detail and symbolism found in Hindu and South Asian art. The goddess Kali, also known as Kalika, is revered in Hinduism as the goddess of time, change, and destruction, and is often invoked for protection and strength. This ancient artifact continues to captivate and inspire, offering a glimpse into the religious and cultural practices of the past.
