Holy Family Departing for Egypt, c1625. Creator: Pieter van Avont
Holy Family Departing for Egypt, c1625. According to the Gospel of Matthew, after the departure of the Wise Men, an angel warned Joseph to flee with Mary and Jesus to Egypt. While Jesus and his cousin John tenderly say goodbye, Joseph, escorted by angels who will guide the family's journey, brings up the donkey for departure. John carries a little cross, is accompanied by a lamb symbolizing Christ's eventual sacrifice that John will later prophecy, and wears the animal skin that will be his clothing as an adult in the wilderness. Years later, Christ came upon John preaching the coming of the Messiah and was baptized by him. The scene gently insists that Christ's life and sacrifice were pre-destined

EDITORS COMMENTS
Pieter van Avont's Holy Family Departing for Egypt, painted around 1625, captures a poignant moment in the early life of Jesus as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew. With the Wise Men's departure signaling imminent danger, an angel instructs Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt for their safety. In this tender scene, Jesus and his cousin John bid farewell, their bond foreshadowing their future encounter when Jesus, as an adult, would be baptized by John. Joseph leads the way, accompanied by angels who will guide their journey, while Mary rides on a donkey. John, wearing an animal skin that will later symbolize his time in the wilderness as a hermit, carries a little cross and a lamb, representing Christ's eventual sacrifice and John's prophecy. The serene landscape of the 17th century Flemish painting, set against the backdrop of Mizraim (Egypt), underscores the significance of this biblical episode. The painting, titled 'Our Lady of Folgoet' or 'Our Lady of Mariazell' in some sources, is an oil on copper masterpiece from Flanders, Belgium, now part of Europe's rich artistic heritage.
