EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Holy Family" artwork, created by Italian Venetian painter and printmaker Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in the mid-18th century. The piece was made using pen with wash technique, adding depth and texture to the image. Tiepolo's artistic talents were not limited to Italy; he also worked extensively in Germany and Spain. His expertise led him to be commissioned for frescoes in churches and palaces, solidifying his reputation as one of the most important artists of his time. In addition to large-scale works, Tiepolo also produced etchings and oil paintings. The print was once part of Vicomte B d Hendecourt's collection in London before finding its way into other hands. It is an illustration from "The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Volume II" a publication by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln released in 1928. This depiction portrays the Holy Family - Madonna (Virgin Mary), Joseph, and baby Jesus - symbolizing Christianity's central figures. Tiepolo masterfully captures their sacred bond through intricate details that evoke religious devotion. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece, it serves as a reminder of Tiepolo's immense talent and contribution to art history during the eighteenth century.
