The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II crowns himself King of Jerusalem, 1229 (1913)
The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II crowns himself King of Jerusalem, 1229 (1913). He reached the altar where the crown lay: lifting it he placed it upon his head, 1913. Frederick II (1194-1250) was King of Germany, Italy, Burgundy and Sicily, as well as Holy Roman Emperor from 1220. Pope Gregory IX (c1145-1241) excommunicated Frederick, so when Frederick took Jerusalem during the Sixth Crusade and demanded to be crowned King, no bishop would perform the coronation. Frederick therefore crowned himself. From A History of Germany by HE Marshall

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a significant moment in history as The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II crowns himself King of Jerusalem in 1229. In this powerful image, we see the emperor standing before the altar, his hand reaching out to lift the crown that symbolizes his authority and dominion. The year is 1913, and Arthur C. Michael skillfully brings this historical event to life through color and detail. Frederick II's coronation holds immense significance due to the circumstances surrounding it. Excommunicated by Pope Gregory IX, Frederick faced opposition from bishops who refused to perform the ceremony. Undeterred by their refusal, he took matters into his own hands and crowned himself as King of Jerusalem. This photograph not only showcases an act of defiance but also highlights Frederick II's ambition and determination as a ruler. As one of Europe's most influential monarchs during the Middle Ages, he held multiple titles including King of Germany, Italy, Burgundy, Sicily, and Holy Roman Emperor. The image evokes a sense of awe with its portrayal of medieval grandeur - from the magnificent candlestick illuminating the scene to Frederick II's regal attire befitting his royal status. It serves as a reminder of an era marked by religious conflicts such as crusades while showcasing how power dynamics played out on both political and religious fronts. Through Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall's book "A History of Germany" this photograph allows us to delve into an important chapter in European history where religion intertwined with politics and individual ambitions shaped nations' destinies.
