The House in which Chatterton died, Brook-Street, Holborn, 1857. Creator: Unknown

The House in which Chatterton died, Brook-Street, Holborn, 1857....we looked over the Gentleman's Magazine...thinking to find an account of the circumstances of the young poet's death, but found no mention of it, his fame was not then of sufficient note to attract much notice. However, we managed to learn that it was in the house of Mrs. Angle, a sackmaker in Brook-street, that Chatterton, a day or two after he had by accident tumbled into an open grave in Old St. Pancras graveyard, died, and was removed for interment to the burial-ground belonging to the parish in which paupers were chiefly interred. The house, a little while ago, formed part of Steffanoni's furniture warehouses, and was in a tattered and ruinous condition, but has recently been repaired. It would be well if some inscription could be put on the houses which are so often passed without notice in the London streets...'.. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the unassuming façade of The House in which Chatterton Died, located in Brook-Street, Holborn, London. The exact date of this image is 1857, but the house holds a much older and intriguing history. Thomas Chatterton, a young and ambitious poet, is said to have died in this very house just a few days after an unfortunate accident in Old St. Pancras graveyard. Chatterton had stumbled into an open grave and, overcome by the shock, succumbed to his injuries. At the time of Chatterton's death, his fame was not yet widespread, and his passing went largely unnoticed. It was only later that his poetic works gained recognition, and his tragic end became a subject of interest. The house in question, then the residence of Mrs. Angle, a sackmaker, was where Chatterton spent his final days. Over the years, the house fell into disrepair and was eventually part of Steffanoni's furniture warehouses. This photograph, taken in 1857, shows the house in a tattered and ruinous condition. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history hidden within the streets of London. It is a testament to the importance of preserving the stories and sites that shape our cultural heritage. The passage from the Illustrated London News, published in the same year as this photograph, expresses the sentiment that it would be fitting to have some form of inscription on the houses that often go unnoticed in the city's streets. Today, The House in which Chatterton Died stands as a quiet tribute to the life and legacy of this once-forgotten poet.
