A huge balloon was necessary for Professor Piccards ascent, c1936 (c1937)
A huge balloon was necessary for Professor Piccards ascent, c1936 (c1937).. Jean Felix Piccard (1884-1963) was a Swiss-born American chemist, engineer, professor and high-altitude balloonist. Piccard invented clustered high-altitude balloons and the plastic balloon. In 1936 he flew a cellophane balloon, 25 feet wide, and made of tapered 33-foot gores and 1-inch 3M Scotch transparent tape. The balloon floated at 50, 000 feet, and in ten hours travelled over 600 miles before landing near Huntsville, Arkansas. From Wonders of World Aviation, Vol. 1, by Clarence Winchester. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the momentous ascent of Professor Jean Felix Piccard in 1936. In order to achieve this daring feat, a colossal balloon was an absolute necessity. Professor Piccard, a Swiss-born American chemist, engineer, professor, and high-altitude balloonist, revolutionized the world of ballooning with his inventions. The photograph showcases the immense size of the cellophane balloon which measured an impressive 25 feet wide. It was constructed using tapered 33-foot gores and held together by innovative 1-inch 3M Scotch transparent tape. As it gracefully floated at an astonishing altitude of 50,000 feet for ten hours straight, covering over 600 miles before gently landing near Huntsville, Arkansas. The image also provides a glimpse into the era's fascination with aviation as crowds gathered to witness this awe-inspiring spectacle. The spectators' expressions reveal their amazement at witnessing such a monumental achievement in flight. Professor Piccard's pioneering work not only pushed boundaries but also paved the way for future advancements in air transport. His contributions to ballooning technology were truly remarkable and played a significant role in shaping aviation history during the thirties. This extraordinary photograph is not just a testament to human ingenuity but also serves as a reminder of our relentless pursuit of exploration and discovery throughout the twentieth century.
