Humphry Davy, English chemist, 1821
Humphry Davy, English chemist, 1821. Davy (1778-1829) discovered the anaesthetic effects of laughing gas (nitrous oxide). In 1801 he was appointed lecturer at the Royal Institution, where he investigated, with his assistant Michael Faraday (1791-1867), his theory of volcanic action. Using electrolysis, Davy isolated the metals barium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and strontium, as well as proving that chlorine was a chemical element. He is probably best known for his invention in 1815 of the miners safety lamp, which enabled deeper, more gaseous seams to be mined without risk of explosion. An example of the lamp is on the table at his elbow. After a portrait by Thomas Phillips

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Humphry Davy, an influential English chemist from the 19th century. In this portrait by Thomas Phillips, we see a distinguished man with a focused gaze, surrounded by elements that define his remarkable career. Davy's groundbreaking discovery of the anaesthetic effects of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) revolutionized medical practices. His relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to investigate volcanic action alongside his assistant Michael Faraday. Together, they delved into theories and experiments at the Royal Institution. The table beside Davy showcases one of his most significant inventions - the miners safety lamp. This ingenious creation allowed miners to work in deeper and more gaseous seams without fearing explosions. The lamp stands as a testament to Davy's commitment to improving industrial safety. Through electrolysis, Davy isolated several metals including barium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and strontium. He also proved that chlorine was indeed a chemical element through meticulous scientific exploration. This print serves as a tribute to Humphry Davy's contributions to science and chemistry during an era when innovation was paramount. It reminds us of his unwavering dedication towards advancing human understanding while ensuring practical applications for societal progress.
