I Don t Care What Becomes Of Me, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

I Don t Care What Becomes Of Me, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "I Don't Care What Becomes Of Me" captures a poignant moment from the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the renowned British Antarctic explorer. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by photographer Herbert Ponting, this image is a testament to the indomitable spirit and unwavering determination of these brave men. Scott's Terra Nova Expedition aimed not only to reach the South Pole but also to continue important scientific research in Antarctica. The team consisted of various experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, engineers, and meteorologists. Their goal was to push the boundaries of human exploration while expanding our understanding of this remote region. Tragically, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions discovered that they had been beaten by Norwegian explorer Amundsen's team. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining crew members perished at the end of March. This haunting photograph serves as a reminder of their sacrifice and bravery in pursuit of knowledge and adventure. It stands as a tribute to those who risked everything for discovery in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments. Preserved within Scott's Last Expedition Volume I published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913; this image continues to captivate viewers with its historical significance and emotional resonance.
