Ice-Breaking Ferry "Baikal", 1899. This album of six photographs depicts the launch of the icebreaking ferry Baikal at the village of Listvenichnoye on the western shore of Lake Baikal on June 17, 1899. Before completion of the Circum-Baikal Railway in 1905, the lake marked a break in the Trans-Siberian Railway linking European Russia with Vladivostok. To connect the western and eastern portions of the railroad, the committee in charge of the Trans-Siberian decided to purchase an icebreaking ferry capable of shuttling passengers and railroad cars across the lake in winter. A contract was placed with the shipbuilding firm of V.G. Armstrong and Company in Newcastle, United Kingdom. The icebreaker was transported in sections from Newcastle to Listvenichnoye, where it was assembled in 1898-99. Located in eastern Siberia near the Russian border with Mongolia, Lake Baikal is 636 kilometers long; its average width is 48 kilometers (80 kilometers at the widest point)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the launch of the ice-breaking ferry "Baikal" in 1899. Created by Akselrod, this album of six photographs documents the significant event that took place at Listvenichnoye, a village on the western shore of Lake Baikal.
At that time, Lake Baikal served as an obstacle for the Trans-Siberian Railway, which connected European Russia to Vladivostok. To bridge this gap and ensure uninterrupted rail transportation throughout all seasons, a decision was made to procure an ice-breaking ferry capable of transporting passengers and railroad cars across the frozen lake during winter months.
The task was entrusted to V.G. Armstrong and Company, a renowned shipbuilding firm based in Newcastle, United Kingdom. The construction process involved shipping various sections of the icebreaker from Newcastle to Listvenichnoye where it was meticulously assembled over several months between 1898 and 1899.
Lake Baikal itself is located in eastern Siberia near Mongolia's border and stretches an impressive length of 636 kilometers with an average width reaching up to 48 kilometers (80 kilometers at its widest point). Its immense size further emphasizes the significance of constructing such a remarkable vessel like "Baikal".
This photograph serves as both a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess while also highlighting Lake Baikal's importance as a natural barrier that required innovative solutions for efficient transportation. Preserved through time by Akselrod's lens, this image immortalizes not only an extraordinary feat but also showcases how mankind can overcome nature's obstacles through determination and resourcefulness.
